Which parts actually reach 60
The 60 TOPS figure is real and narrower than it appears. AMD’s March 2026 portfolio announcement attaches “up to 60 TOPS of AI compute” to the Ryzen AI PRO 400 Series mobile processors, while describing the desktop parts — the 450G, 440G, 435G and their GE and PRO variants — as “featuring a neural processing unit (NPU) providing up to 50 TOPS of AI compute.”
In other words, no desktop part in the series reaches 60. If you are buying a desktop expecting the headline figure, the honest answer is that the headline was written for a different product line. That is the first thing a reader wanting Ryzen AI 400 explained accurately needs to know.
All of these clear Microsoft’s stated “40+ TOPS” Copilot+ requirement, so the practical difference between 50 and 60 is smaller than the marketing gap suggests — both qualify, and qualification is what unlocks features.
AMD announced Ryzen AI 400 and Ryzen AI PRO 400 mobile processors at CES 2026, followed by desktop additions in March. The headline specification is up to 60 TOPS from the second-generation XDNA 2 NPU. Every announced mobile chip in the initial stack is rated at 50 TOPS or more, above Microsoft’s stated 40-plus TOPS threshold for Copilot+ PCs.
The range is wider than one number
The mobile family spans four to twelve CPU cores, integrated Radeon graphics with different compute-unit counts, and configurable power ranges. The top Ryzen AI 9 HX 475 is rated at 60 NPU TOPS, while most of the range is rated at 50. AMD’s separate Ryzen AI Max+ products pair a 50-TOPS NPU with much larger integrated graphics and high unified-memory configurations.
That distinction matters, and it is the part most summaries of Ryzen AI 400 explained leave out. An office feature optimized for the NPU may run well across the range. A local language model, 3D workload or creative application may depend more on memory bandwidth, GPU capacity and cooling. A thin laptop and a mobile workstation using related silicon should not be expected to behave identically under sustained load.

Two rows deserve attention. The hybrid core layout — four full Zen 5 cores plus four denser Zen 5c cores with a lower ceiling — means a single quoted boost clock applies to half the cores. And the two AI rows differ by 16 TOPS, which is the platform figure counting CPU and graphics contributions alongside the NPU.
One part number, a 3.6x power range
The configurable TDP range is the most consequential line in that table and the one buyers most often miss. A 15W to 54W window means the same processor can be deployed at less than a third of its maximum power or at nearly double its 28W default, entirely at the laptop maker’s discretion.
The ratio between the extremes is roughly 3.6 times. Two laptops carrying identical Ryzen AI 7 450 badges can therefore deliver substantially different sustained performance, different battery life and different fan behavior, without either being defective or misadvertised.
What follows practically:
- The processor name is not a performance specification. The chassis and its cooling decide where in that window the chip actually operates.
- Read reviews of the exact laptop, not of the silicon. A review of one implementation does not transfer to another.
- Look for sustained-load testing, since a thin design may hold the higher figure only briefly.
- Check behavior on battery. Many designs reduce power when unplugged, which is where you will use a laptop most.
This is why any account of Ryzen AI 400 explained through specifications alone is incomplete: the specification defines a range of possible products rather than one product.
What TOPS can and cannot tell you
TOPS is useful for checking an eligibility threshold and comparing a processor’s stated peak NPU throughput. It does not reveal the precision used for the figure, the performance of a specific model, or the energy used to complete a task. It also says nothing about whether an application has a compatible execution path.
AMD’s announcement contains its own performance and battery claims. Those are useful indicators of the company’s intended positioning, but they are not a substitute for independent testing of shipping laptops. Chassis design, firmware and memory configuration can materially affect results.
Who should pay attention
Business fleets may value the PRO variants for manageability and platform stability. Developers interested in local inference should compare RAM capacity, GPU support and AMD’s ROCm compatibility for their specific tools. Everyday laptop buyers should prioritize a good display, battery life, keyboard, ports and warranty after confirming that the desired Windows AI features are supported — which is where Ryzen AI 400 explained stops being a silicon question and becomes a laptop question.
